Who Is She?

Jess Klein is a songwriter's songwriter: the kind of artist other writers quietly revere, even if she never became a household name. She rose out of the Boston folk scene in the late 1990s with a mix of bluesy roots rock and unusually honest, emotionally exposed folk.

Over two decades and a long run of records, she has built a body of work defined by craft and candor. The New York Times summed her up as "a songwriter with a voice of unblinking tenacity," which is about right: her songs look straight at hard things and do not flinch.

The Story

1. 1974

   Born in Rochester, New York

   Klein grows up in western New York and starts writing songs in college, developing the plainspoken, searching style she would keep.

2. Late 1990s

   The Boston scene

   She rises out of Boston's fertile folk world, wins the Telluride Troubadour songwriting contest, and earns a record deal with Rykodisc.

3. 2000

   Draw Them Near

   Her Rykodisc debut launches a worldwide tour, including a set before tens of thousands at Japan's Fuji Rock Festival.

4. 2006

   City Garden

   A critically lauded record that deepens her reputation as a writer of real depth and range.

5. 2016

   Home to North Carolina

   After eight years in Austin, Klein settles in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and keeps releasing records, several via the German label Blue Rose.

6. 2026

   Dreaming Aloud

   Her recent album, and proof that the writing has only sharpened over a quarter century.
