Who Is He?

Chuck Prophet (born in 1963 in Whittier, California) is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter long based in San Francisco. He first drew notice in the 1980s as the lead guitarist of Green on Red, a band tied to the Paisley Underground scene of Los Angeles, before launching a solo career at the start of the 1990s.

Over three decades of solo records he has become known as a durable roots-rock craftsman: a player with a lean, melodic guitar style and a songwriter with an ear for sharp hooks and vivid, character-driven storytelling. His catalog spans blues, country, garage rock, soul, and pop, held together by a consistent sense of craft.

He remains an active touring and recording artist, working closely with a core band and a small circle of collaborators, and he has also written and produced for other artists over the years.

Prophet's career moves from sideman to bandleader, and from the desert rock of the eighties to a mature, wide-ranging solo catalog rooted in California.

1. 1980s

   Green on Red

   Prophet joined Green on Red as lead guitarist, appearing on a run of the band's records through the decade. Associated with the Paisley Underground, the group blended garage rock, country, and psychedelia, and gave Prophet his first wide audience.

2. 1990

   Going solo

   As Green on Red wound down, Prophet launched a solo career with Brother Aldo in 1990, establishing the roots-rock songwriting voice that would define his work.

3. 1990s

   Building a catalog

   Through the decade he released a string of solo albums and toured steadily, developing a reputation as a guitarist's guitarist and a writer with a knack for melody and detail.

4. 2004

   The Age of Miracles

   This record widened his audience and remains one of his most celebrated, pairing his guitar work with polished, hook-forward songwriting and the single "Summertime Thing."

5. 2012

   Temple Beautiful

   A song cycle built around San Francisco places and characters, widely regarded as a career highlight and a showcase for his storytelling and his touring band, the Mission Express.

6. 2017–2020

   Bobby Fuller and beyond

   He continued a productive late run with Bobby Fuller Died for Your Sins in 2017 and The Land That Time Forgot in 2020, both praised as sharp, consistent additions to the catalog.

7. 2024

   New directions

   He kept experimenting on later releases, including collaborative work that folded cumbia and Latin roots textures into his rock songwriting, while continuing to tour.
