Who Is He?
Lukas Nelson (born in 1988) is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist, and the son of country legend Willie Nelson. He leads the band Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, a country and roots-rock group he formed in California in 2008. Raised around his father's touring operation, he developed as a guitar player and writer in the folk, country, and Southern-rock traditions.
Two things define his path. First, the band: Promise of the Real became a tight, road-hardened unit that also spent several years as the backing group for Neil Young, playing on his albums and touring the world with him. Second, the songwriting: across a run of studio albums Nelson has built a catalog rooted in classic country, Americana, and warm California roots rock.
He remains an active touring and recording musician, releasing albums under the band name and, more recently, under his own name.

A musical childhood
Born to Willie Nelson and Annie D'Angelo, Lukas grew up immersed in his father's touring world, learning guitar early and absorbing country, folk, and rock from the road.
2008
Promise of the Real
Nelson formed Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real in California, with drummer Anthony LoGerfo and bassist Corey McCormick anchoring a lineup built for the club and festival circuit.
2010–2015
Building the catalog
Early independent releases, including the debut Promise of the Real, established the band's blend of country, blues, and roots rock as they toured heavily across the United States.
2015
Backing Neil Young
The band became Neil Young's backing group, recording the album The Monsanto Years and touring with him. The partnership continued across several more Young releases and world tours.
2016–2017
Something Real and a breakthrough
Something Real arrived in 2016, followed by the self-titled Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real in 2017, the album that widened the band's audience and drew critical attention.
2019–2021
A steady run of records
Turn Off the News (Build a Garden) in 2019 and A Few Stars Apart in 2021 deepened the songwriting and confirmed the band as a fixture of modern Americana.
2023 onward
Sticks and Stones and solo work
Sticks and Stones continued the band's output, and Nelson has since begun releasing music under his own name, extending a catalog now more than a decade deep.
